A meditation on people and their living environments in villages across six West African countries: Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin and Senegal. Trinh T. Minh-ha juxtaposes images and sounds from different cultures and places, thereby pushing at the boundaries of ethnographic film. The resultant sense of sensorial vision and perception is further heightened through sound, music and ambient noises. Trinh T. Minh-ha, who lists herself in the credits as cinematographer, screenwriter and music recorder while crossing out the title of “director”  clarifies as follows: ‘The non-expressive, non-melodic, non-narrative elements of the work require a different kind of attention: one that hears sound as sound, sees the word as word and the image as image.’ (mg)
